You may not fully understand what a Pokémon is – and maybe you’re just now hearing about this Pokémon Go craze. That’s okay. Here’s what you need to know – there is an insane opportunity, right now, to capitalize and convert a swarm of roving gamers into potentially paying customers.

The quick tutorial:

Pokémon are adventurous, animated creatures of all shapes, sizes and personalities. The goal is to “catch ’em all.”

That’s where Pokémon Go fits in. Here’s the gist, from Pokemon.com:

With Pokémon GO, you’ll discover Pokémon in a whole new world—your own! Pokémon GO is built on Niantic’s Real World Gaming Platform and will use real locations to encourage players to search far and wide in the real world to discover Pokémon. Pokémon GO allows you to find and catch more than a hundred species of Pokémon as you explore your surroundings.

The key words there – “real locations.” Pokémon Go players are being drawn to local retailers, landmarks, restaurants, churches – maybe even your business.

How popular is this?
According to an article on Inc.com, “The speed at which Pokemon Go has spread is unprecedented. Less than a week after launch, this augmented reality mobile exploration game has been installed on twice as many phones as Tinder, it has double the engagement of Snapchat, and it is eclipsing Twitter in its percentage of daily active users.”

So maybe it’s a trend destined to flare out – but it’s big RIGHT NOW. The article goes on to detail ways you can capitalize on the foot traffic with simple in-app purchases and marketing campaigns. Step one, it suggests, is finding out if your business is a PokeStop. (Check out the map here to find the locations of known Pokestops.) Maybe your business is a PokeStop. Maybe it’s not. Either way, with a little creativity, you can tap into the Pokémon Go excitement and potentially gain some new business for your business.
