KANEKO’s Truck-A-Tecture exhibition, which opens on June 27 and runs through August 23, will examine architecture as redefined by mobility and technical expansion, and will include participation from leaders in the field of architecture.

Truck-A-Tecture at KANEKO sets the stage for a debate on an unlikely pair of themes: prefabricated architectural solutions and the mobile culture of trucking. The intent of this project is to bring about a productive collision between the architect’s vision of efficient and sustainable housing and the reality of nomadic contemporary lifestyles involving a multiplicity of locations and sites.

Four architecture firms will design and build full-scale structures and the additional firms will create scaled models. Once complete, the full-scale structures will travel to KANEKO from their various construction locations around the country. The scaled models will be displayed atop a 44-foot long semi trailer parked in the Bow Truss Gallery.

Full-scale structure participants include:

  • Jones Partners, Architects – Los Angeles, CA
  • Mark Mack Architects – Venice, CA
  • Min|Day – San Francisco, CA / Omaha, NE
  • Office of Mobile Design – Venice, CA

The exhibition’s curator, Mark Mack of Mark Mack Architects, explains that “the ultimate aim of Truck-A-Tecture is to challenge current definitions of prefabrication and mobile architecture and to expand the horizon of their applications in everyday living to embrace contemporary economic and geographic realities.”

Public programming accompanying the exhibition will include a symposium on mobile and trucking architecture, talks, film screenings of classic and contemporary road movies, a fully fitted-out truck cab, and a continuous loop of videos on the theme of mobile architecture.

A parallel exhibition entitled OFF-SITE: Prefabrication and the Home will be on display in an adjacent gallery. The exhibition’s curator, Jennifer Siegal, explains that OFF-SITE “will offer the public an opportunity to examine close-up contemporary prefab models, interpret and reconsider new building formats, and come away with a new vision for the future of off-site manufacturing.” Solutions to current economic and social concerns existing in the housing industry, such as affordability, sustainability, and individual customization, will be explored through emerging technologies and trends.

The opening reception for these exhibitions on June 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. is free and open to the public. A symposium involving the four curators of the full-scale structures of Truck-A-Tecture, Min | Day Architects, Wes Jones (Jones Partners Architecture), Mark Mack (Mark Mack Architects), and Jennifer Siegal (Office of Mobile Design), will take place during this opening reception at 7 p.m.
