Who do couples turn to when the want to get married, and they are not connected to a church, organized religion, or have a religious belief?  Chaplain Royal says the answer is, “Me!”

“Since 2009 I have served all without exception.  I have created, organized, and officiated ceremonies for same sex couples, Christians, those who are not religious, those who are eloping, and those with hundreds of guests.”

Chaplain Royal’s seminary studies, training programs, and life experiences led him founding The Inclusive Life Center, an incorporated religious organization that provides pastoral care and pastoral services to all without exception.

Chaplain Royal

Royal Carleton (Bush) spent the first part of his life growing up in Bellevue, with his mom, Mildred.  Bellevue in the late 60’s was a small town, and not the growing city that it is today.  It was a town that everyone knew you by name, and a handshake still meant something.

When a family had a struggle, their family, friends, and neighbors rallied to support them.  It was a great example of what community should be!   “I learned about Hospitality from my Mom.  She always fixed too much food, she said there is always room for one more.  And, she was always giving things of ours to others, she said there are others who need it more than we do.  This was the ground work that lead to many years in hospitality management, and later to seminary studies.  It all about helping others, serving others, and sharing what I have.”

“I had conversations with friends, family, and with others sharing that times have changed, and that not everyone is connected to organized religion or a church, and “those” people do not have a pastor to turn to handle life rituals, pastoral care, and all of those things that can be eased with intentional; love, compassion, and rituals specific to their need.

Chaplain Royal launched Inclusive Life in 2009, he was met with great surprise to many individuals, couples and families who needed pastoral services, and pastoral care.  He began receiving phone calls, and emails explaining that a parent had passed and since they were not a current member or a contributing member of a church, that church would not offer services.  Other couples shared that they wanted to get married, and because one or both, did not identify as Christian, all the churches they visited were not willing to help them.

“When people, no matter who they are, where they are from, who they love, or what they believe need help with; grief, life rituals, or help with important life events there should be a resource for them, without strings attached of membership, tithing, or other requirements.  Pastoral Care and Services should, in my understanding, our job as clergy is about serving others, helping others, and loving others.  Period.”

A majority of the services that were booked with Chaplain Royal in 2009 and 2010 were to officiate weddings.  Couples were elated with Chaplain Royal’s approach, and agreed that the little things are the big things!  Chaplain Royal officiates Funerals, Weddings, Baptisms, Welcoming Ceremonies, and Blessings.  In addition, he offers Grief Coaching, Hospital Visits, and Premarital Coaching.

“There are thousands of weddings each year in the metro, many of them will be officiated by a church pastor or priest.  For couples who want to co-author their wedding ceremony, who want to add personal and unique elements, and to enjoy a customized romantic ceremony that tells their story of love and life, they need someone that has experience, passion, and ability, that will traditionally go far beyond a typical church pastor.  I enjoy working with each couple to create their wedding, their way.”

Chaplain Royal’s couples send notes, leave emails, and emails that their experience was just what they wanted, and that their family and friends noted so many of the little things that were so different from other weddings.  Things like not standing front and center for the entire ceremony, so the couple can be the center of all the photos.  Things like a custom story of love (how they met, their first date, their engagement, and where they are heading together in life.)  Things like beginning with having the couple take a deep breath in and be fully present and relaxed before we begin.   “I do not use new names in old scripts.  Each ceremony is unique and special, because each couple is unique and special.

I believe that each couples wedding ceremony is one of the most important days in their life.  My job goes far beyond reading words, it is about creating, maintaining   should No matter how off-beat, couples can assimilate their personality into any tradition to give it a personal and cool meaning.”

Chaplin Royal is working with a team of people to create a weekly fellowship that will focus more on people, more on love, more on feeding others what they are hungry for.  And in his spare time he remains active within the community.

Royal and Jon

“Serving others isn’t a Monday through Friday, 9 to 5 job.  Serving others is around the clock, around the year, and no matter where you may be.  I enjoy being a face, a voice, and source of strength for others who are unable to do so.”   Chaplain Royal is married, he met Jonathan over ten years ago, while Jonathan was living in New Hampshire.  In 2008, Jonathan moved to Nebraska so they both could begin a new chapter in life.  They were legally married in Iowa in 2012.  Today they love sending time with friends, entertaining, and creating space for others to gather in.  As Royal now says, there is always room for one more!
