For the sixth consecutive year, the University of Nebraska Medical Center will be holding the UNMC Skate-a-thon for Parkinson’s at the UNMC Ice Rink.

The 24-hour event is open to the public and will take place from noon on Jan. 22 to noon on Jan. 23.

Over the past five years, the skate-a-thon has raised more than $140,000 with proceeds going toward Parkinson’s research at UNMC and to the Parkinson’s Health Development Program, a non-profit, local program that offers affordable exercises and activities to improve quality of life for persons with Parkinson’s.

Last year’s event drew a record 540 skaters and more than 1,000 people attended. Despite these great numbers, we are convinced that many more people would like to participate, but they just don’t know about it.

To grow the skate-a-thon this year, we are going to Omaha area businesses to ask for a helping hand.

Here’s what we would like for you to consider:

  • Try to form a company team of skaters. It would be similar to the Omaha Corporate Cup. Skaters could wear company hats, coats, T-shirts.
  • We don’t care how many participants you get. We just want your company to be represented.
  • You could let your employees know about the event by running an item in your company newsletter or sending an email to all employees.
  • The cost to participate is only $10 per skater. This fee includes skate rental and ice access. People can skate as long as they wish.
  • If your company would simply like to make a donation, that would be very much appreciated. We have corporate sponsorships available to fit any budget. We will display banners of all the corporate sponsors on the wall surrounding the ice rink.
  • Skaters are encouraged to raise additional money by getting friends and family to donate, but this is not required. Anybody can donate. You don’t have to be present. You don’t have to skate.
  • We will give prizes to the businesses which have the most participants and raise the most money.

Best of all, the skate-a-thon is a lot of fun. Guest emcees keep the event moving, and skaters groove to continual music. There also will be hot drinks, food and snacks.

As many as one million Americans currently live with Parkinson’s. This is more than the combined number of people with multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and Lou Gehrig’s disease. Parkinson’s affects about 3 percent of the population over the age of 65.

There currently is no cure for Parkinson’s, but there is great hope – thanks to the research being done at UNMC and other research centers around the country.

We can make a difference. Please consider getting your business to participate in this year’s skate-a-thon.

It will only take a few minutes of your time to spread the word to your employees. We will be happy to provide any support material you might need (e.g. flyers, news releases, etc.).

If your company decides to participate, please call or drop us an email and let us know that this is happening.

Thanks in advance for your consideration. It is greatly appreciated.

We hope 2016 brings you all the best.
