Graduation season is here, and that means a new group of young professionals is joining the workforce.

Whether it’s part of the job description or not, good social media sense has become a key soft skill that employers consider when screening job candidates and conducting performance reviews.

In fact, in a recent survey of 200 Omaha companies, nearly 75 percent said that the maturity level of the content and photos that potential employees post on their personal social media pages is important when evaluating job candidates.

“Employers feel that how you represent yourself online sends a message about how you’re going to represent their company,” says Gina Pappas, director of new media at Albers Communications Group. “It’s not just about not posting compromising pictures of yourself, although that’s important. A job candidate’s online image is a window into their communications skills, how well-rounded they are and their professionalism.”

Young professionals should also be encouraged to use their online presence to become brand advocates for their organization, Pappas adds. This can help them prepare for their next position. “Many people think of LinkedIn as the only place where it’s beneficial to promote yourself professionally,” she says. “But our research shows that close to 90% of employers who review social media pages as part of the hiring process are looking at Facebook. Twitter, personal blogs, Instagram and the others are all important, too.”
