Title: “The New Four-Letter Word in the Workplace – Data”

TOPIC:  This presentation is intended as a general overview of the data privacy and security laws affecting employers.  This includes the identification of critical issues employers need to recognize when handling confidential information and the procedures that may be implemented to reduce risks of liability.   Despite the most diligent efforts, data breaches can occur.  We will discuss what it means to have a data breach and what legal obligations companies may have when a data breach occurs.

The use of this seal is not an endorsement by the HR Certification  Institute of the quality of the program. About the Presenter

B. Tyler Philippi is an Associate in the Omaha office of Jackson Lewis P.C.

Mr. Philippi concentrates his practice in the areas of ERISA and employee benefits. He represents clients encountering a variety of issues related to employee benefit plans including Internal Revenue Service and United States Department of Labor corrections, plan design and administration, and reporting and disclosure compliance. Mr. Philippi has also counseled clients regarding HIPAA-related issues and data breach notification requirements.

Prior to joining Jackson Lewis, Mr. Philippi worked as an Investigator for the United States Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) in Chicago, Illinois. While at EBSA, Mr. Philippi conducted civil investigations of employee pension and welfare benefit plans to ensure compliance with ERISA, the Affordable Care Act, HIPAA, COBRA, and other laws and regulations.

Mr. Philippi earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business from Lake Forest College in 2003. Mr. Philippi earned his J.D. in 2010 and in 2011 he earned his LL.M. in Employee Benefits with Honors, both from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois. While in law school, he was a member of the Employee Benefits Law Student Association and on the Trial Advocacy and Dispute Resolution Honors Council. Mr. Philippi was also on the Dean’s List, received the Herzog Scholarship, and earned CALI Excellence for the Future Awards in Torts and Income Taxation. He also worked as a Research Associate for an executive compensation consulting firm, as a Research Assistant for a law review article about the Fourth Amendment and consent searches, and served as a Judicial Intern for the Honorable Judge Jesse Reyes in the Cook County Chancery Division.
