The Strategic Air & Space Museum announces its annual Indoor Air Show event set for Saturday, January 16, 2016. The Indoor Air Show brings the fun and excitement of an air show inside with radio-controlled (R/C) models. The model pilots will demonstrate all of the loops, flips, and barrel rolls in the museum’s climate-controlled Durham Restoration Hangar.

Air shows are popular outdoor shows in warm weather months, but in the winter, it is difficult for R/C enthusiasts to find airfield substitutes. To help ease the air show withdrawal, the museum offers its over 30,000 square foot Restoration Hangar to local R/C clubs. The clubs will demonstrate their skills in a space that has 60 foot ceiling height which enables them to practice acrobatic dives.

The public is invited to come out to the museum and experience flight, learn about radio controlled aircraft, quadcopters, and safe flying practices. The SAC Museum Drone Club will be onsite to discuss the new FAA regulations which were effective December 21, 2015, and how to fly unmanned aerials in safe fly zones.

Several R/C clubs will fly throughout the day beginning at 10am and concluding at 2pm. Viewing will be set up in Hangar B and the Gilbert M. & Martha H. Hitchcock Observation Gallery.

Indoor Air Show will also include display and information booths from several R/C clubs, an ultralight club, UNL, and more. An ultralight aircraft presentation will be held in the museum’s theater at 1pm. Ultralight aircraft are one seat fixed-wing aircraft that are used for recreational flight. A pilot’s license is not required to fly an ultralight.

The museum is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. General admission applies. Visitors will see and can participate in the museum’s newest traveling exhibit, Science & Art, which will be on display at the Strategic Air & Space Museum January 16, 2016, through April 10, 2016.
