Hello! My name is Linda Dueling. I am the Promotional Director and Community Liaison for this wonderful Non Profit by the name of Radio Talking Book Service (RTBS). Who is Radio Talking Book Service? RTBS  serves the state of Nebraska with a mission to provide human-voiced information to individuals who have visual or physical disabilities which prevent them from reading printed material. RTBS is in their 42nd year of providing a vital connection for the blind and visually impaired persons with the printed word. Our small yet invaluable organization has six paid employees and over 90 volunteers. Our organization operates within the Immanuel Hospital grounds. Our key program areas are the Radio Talking Book Network, a state wide radio reading service; and Listening Link, an educational reading program.

The Radio Talking Book Network founded in 1974, is Nebraska’s audio companion and only reading service. RTBN helps restore our listeners ability to access visual materials, current press releases, and other public available information. Through the reading of newspapers, magazines and books, RTBN provides our state wide audience with a wide variety of informational programming along with mental stimulation every day of the year. Current statistics show 95% of printed material are inaccessible to the blind and visually impaired population. RTBN provides equal access to this printed information and the public process to a disadvantaged and typically underserved population group. RTBN uses over 90 volunteers , whose diverse voices are broadcast throughout Nebraska and Southwest Iowa over closed circuit sub-carrier frequencies of public radio and television stations. The “voices” of RTBN help alleviate isolation, which often affects people with diminishing vision, providing our listeners with companionship. Our human and personal presentation reach’s listeners via RTBN’s radio receivers, a familiar, easy to use medium beloved by our listeners that is provided free of charge.

The Listening Link Educational Program assists blind, visually impaired and learning disabled students in eliminating educational barriers they face. Founded in 1992, Listening Link works with area schools and collages, providing human voiced recordings of textbooks and other course material required for degree completion and academic success. Our volunteers provide over 2,000 hours of recorded textbooks and other educational materials that are not already available commercially or through such resources as the Library of Congress or Recordings for the blind and dyslexic. RTBS envisions this service being offered to students of all age groups; currently we are serving the students at Wayne State Collage and Creighton University. If you are an educator and would like to learn more give us a call.

Interested in getting a first hand look at our organization? Email me; I will arrange a tour for you or a group. RTBS knows in order to stop “coasting” through our community we need to inform our community business leaders who we are and what we do. As the Promotional Director I know the first place I need to go is Omaha Greater Chamber. Id like to Thank You for reading this article. Now that you have can you imagine a world where printed material is something you had no access to at all unless you asked a family member or friend to read to you? Through our service an individual is given a “tool” that not only allows a self directed life; but a dignified life as well !
