The Werner Institute of Creighton University is pleased to present a free public forum and reception for our alumni merit award winner Jeff Thompson, MS-Negotiation and Dispute Resolution on Thursday September 17th, 2015 at 4:30pm – 6:30pm in the Harper Center Hixson-Lied Auditorium of Creighton University.  

Jeff Thompson, MS-NDR’10 will be presenting a public forum about the application of crisis management in conflict resolution and how the practical communication skills he developed at the Werner Institute helped him progress in many aspects of his personal and professional life, how trainings can help with community engagement and his findings on the importance of social media to build community support.

Mr. Thompson will share the skills used by hostage and crisis negotiators. Reflecting on what these negotiation experts have done effectively can allow you to apply it to situations you are involved in ranging from misunderstandings, business/work disputes, and personal conflicts. He will share specific skills that crisis negotiators have used to de-esclate tense situations, demonstrate empathy, build rapport and trust, and be able to successfully influence others.

About Jeff Thompson, MS-Negotiation and Dispute Resolution:

Jeff Thompson is a NYPD Detective and is a member of the Hostage Negotiation Team and the Strategic Communications Unit. He is also a researcher, mediator, and trainer. 

He was a recent Research Fellow at Columbia University Law School researching law enforcement crisis and hostage negotiation. Additionally, Jeff is a PhD candidate researching nonverbal communication and mediation with respect to developing rapport, building trust, and displaying professionalism at Griffith University Law School (Brisbane, Australia).

Aside of being on the Hostage Negotiation Team, Jeff promotes conflict resolution skills in his various NYPD roles. This has included designing training for officers to use mediation and negotiation skills when engaging the public to build police-community relations as well as means of gaining voluntary compliance. His trainings were implemented to teach more than 20,000 NYPD police officers, police executives, and recruits.

Jeff is on the board of the Association of Conflict Resolution’s (ACR) Greater New York Chapter, he is the co-chair of ACR’s national Crisis Negotiation Section, and volunteers with the New York Peace Institute. He received his MS in Negotiation and Dispute Resolution from the Werner Institute, Creighton University School of Law in 2010.
