Omaha’s newest radio station, Boomer 1490, is now officially on the air.

Formerly known as Magic 1490, Boomer 1490 (call letters KOMJ) will feature many of the same songs that made Magic popular with but with some updated playlists, live local DJ’s, and fun contests – all familiar to today’s baby boomer audience.

The station describes its revamped format as “the greatest music ever made,” from the 50’s to today’s crooners.  From Elvis to Michael Buble, The Beatles to Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow to Motown, the Beach Boys to The Carpenters and many more of the artists and eras that ‘boomers’ loved then and love now.

“We are very excited about the new station,” says Steve Seline, owner of Walnut Radio LLC: the company purchased KOMJ from its out-of-state owners, taking ownership on January 2nd, 2015. “Boomer 1490 is the only locally owned radio station here in Omaha, and we look forward to not only helping our great community but to serve the baby boomer audience – one that we all feel is the greatest generation ever.”

KOMJ becomes the fourth Nebraska station purchased by Walnut Radio this year, joining “Country 97.3” KBLR-FM Blair, Adult Contemporary “Mix 105.5” KFMT-FM Fremont, and Full Service (news, talk & classic hits) 1340 KHUB Fremont. Before forming Walnut Radio, Seline was formerly Vice Chairman of Waitt Media.

The adult-oriented music station had recently made headlines when no one (including the FCC) could pinpoint where its studio was located. The previous owner had no disc jockeys and no commercials on the station; yet 1490 AM was still a chart-topper with many people in Omaha and Council Bluffs.

“I would love to see the station stay on the air,” said listener Michael Ray in a recent Omaha World Herald article. “It’s been years since I’ve heard many of the songs they have been playing – it just brings a smile to my face.”  Ray’s comments echoed those of numerous emailers and online commenters after the article was published.

Boomer 1490 officially went on the air Wednesday evening at 6:00pm at a special ‘launch’ party held at Gorat’s Steakhouse, where over 150 invited guests participated in a station countdown until it went live.

“It was an exciting night,” adds General Manager Chris Walz. “To see a packed room full of friends, family and clients all count down and cheer for, not only a new station programmed for them, but also for local radio being back in Omaha! “

Adds Operations Manager (and Morning Show host) J.J. Morgan, “We’re telling folks that if you’ve liked Magic 1490 all these years, then you’re going to love Boomer 1490. Tune it in, sit back, and enjoy the memories. You’ll be pleasantly surprised!”

The station in located at 1490 on the AM dial, online at Boomer1490.com, and on Facebook and Twitter.
