“We have a true mission to help workplaces be better and to help people find analytics on everything that’s important to humankind.” The exchange is etched in Jane Miller’s memory: “My dad took me to my grandma’s house, and I remember he was in a hurry to get out of there. She said, ‘You have to get back to work, you have 50 mouths to feed,’ and it was ingrained in my brain.” Now, as chief operating officer of Gallup, Miller helps lead a globally-renowned organization with “2000 mouths to feed.” “That’s an impact on quite a few families,” she says. “So, we just keep working. We just keeping making it a better place not only at Gallup but for all of our clients and for society.” A respected thought leader in performance management, leadership and organizational identity, Miller began her career with Selection Research Inc. (SRI), a company founded by her father, the late Don Clifton. SRI acquired Gallup in 1988; Miller was named COO in 2000. She is responsible for all operational aspects of the company, including execution of The Gallup Path, a tool that helps cultivate high-performing, “best practice” workplaces. “I always say it’s not good enough to be a great workplace anymore, you have to be extraordinary to compete and get the best talent, and that’s what we’re there for,” Miller says. A particular focus for her? Ensuring companies are well-positioned to attract women and millennials. “We’re saying to organizations you need to change because you need women and millennials for the future in order to compete.” Looking to the future of Gallup, she says she is most excited about the way the organization continues to evolve and remake itself. “We’ve expanded our markets and services. Our technology is better than it’s ever been. We continue to expand everything we do so it really is helping organizations think about strengths and engagement and creating incredible workplaces.” Not only is she invested in Gallup, its employees and clients, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate is invested in the community. She serves as trustee of the Peter Kiewit Foundation and on the boards of Creighton University and the Omaha Zoological Society. Committed to advancing women in business, she received the Greater Omaha Chamber’s Women in Leadership Award and has been named an honorary chair for ICAN, Girls Inc. and TeamMates. Miller is being inducted into the Omaha Business Hall of Fame along with her older brother, Jim Clifton, who serves as Gallup’s CEO. |
