The South Omaha Community

South Omaha was initially incorporated as a city in 1886 and was primarily dependent on the cattle industry. It was annexed by the City of Omaha 29 years later and remains a culturally diverse population that has attracted Irish, Polish, Czech, Lithuanian, Italian, Latino and Sudanese immigrants over the years.

Today, approximately 35,000 residents residing in more than 12,000 households are within the boundaries of the South Omaha Development Project. Close to half of the residents identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino.
